Android users accessing their work email must use the Microsoft Outlook for Android app. The native email app doesn’t support the correct method of authentication needed for Microsoft MFA.
Apple users can use either the Outlook for IOS app or the default Mail app, but Sentrian recommends Outlook for IOS for the best experience with Office 365.

Setting up the app

MFA is a very important part of online security. Verifying your identity using a second factor such as your Smart Phone prevents anyone but you from logging in, even if they know your password.
Setting up MFA on your phone is quick and easy, and once setup will only require you to select ‘Approve’ on a notification rather than entering a code like you might be used to with other MFA.

  1. Browse to the following address on your computer and login

    https://aka.ms/mfasetup

  2. Click next on this screen
  3. Download the Microsoft Authenticator, then choose Next

The MFA app can be downloaded via the following links:
    Microsoft Authenticator for Android
    Microsoft Authenticator for IOS

  4. Follow the steps described

Follow the instructions on the screen:

  5. On your phone
  6. Scan the QR code on the screen with your phone, then click next
  7. Microsoft will now send a notification to your phone
  8. On Your phone, select the notification, then choose Approve
  9. Setup complete

For future sign in’s, you will be prompted like below and will receive a notification on your mobile.

  • I am trying to setup RDP connection between two Windows 10 machines. The PC from which the connection is opened is using a local account while the PC that I'm trying to connect to is using a Microsoft account. Upon entering the string MicrosoftAccount email protected with the correct password no connection is established. Thank you in advance.
  • There’s a lot of requests to extend the Microsoft Authenticator service onto Windows console logons and RDP logons, and since MS have sunset the on-premises MFA server this is only increasing. Microsoft seem hell-bent on pushing through the passwordless, biometric concept of Windows Hello, and while this is something that no doubt will gain.

What is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) strengthens access security by requiring two methods (also referred to as factors) to verify your identity. These factors can include something you know – like a username and password, plus something you have – like a smartphone app to approve authentication requests.

2FA protects against phishing, social engineering and password brute-force attacks and secures your logins from attackers exploiting weak or stolen credentials.

Duo integrates with Microsoft Windows client and server operating systems to add two-factor authentication to Remote Desktop and local logons.

How To Setup Duo

  • Sign up for a Duo account: https://signup.duo.com/
  • Log in to the Duo Admin Panel: https://admin.duosecurity.com/login
  • Navigate from the left menu to Applications:
  • Click the Protect an Application button:
  • Search for RDP and locate Microsoft RDP in the applications list. Click Protect this Application:
  • Get your integration key, secret key, and API hostname on the next page. You will need this information to install the Duo application. Treat your secret key like a password – the security of your Duo application is tied to the security of your secret key (skey).
  • On the VPS, download the Duo Authentication for Windows Logon installer package:https://dl.duosecurity.com/duo-win-login-latest.exe
  • Run the Duo Authentication for Windows Logon installer with administrative privileges.
  • When prompted, enter your API Hostname from the Duo Admin Panel and click Next. The installer verifies that your Windows system has connectivity to the Duo service before proceeding.
  • If the connectivity check fails, ensure that your Windows system is able to communicate with your Duo API hostname over HTTPS (port 443).

  • Enter your integration key and secret key from the Duo Admin Panel and click Next again.
